Welcome home, wombats: Birmingham Zoo gets two new residentsPosted On Al.com by William Thornton --- Birmingham News March 17, 2009 8:58 PM Categories: Breaking News The Birmingham Zoo's two new Southern hairy-nosed wombats, Victoria and Wilbur, were introduced to visitors today at the zoo's Kangaroo Kountry exhibit. Wombats are furry, burrowing marsupials native to Australia. They usually live in mountains and forests, and are herbivores. They are the only animals of their kind with a backward-facing pouch for their young. The wombats came from Australia's Melbourne Zoo. Wombats go into a deep sleep during winter days and feed at night, though they don't eat as much as they would during warmer months. When spring comes, wombats look for fresh grass and begin mating. As the zoo is looking to breed wombats for their exhibit, keepers are anxious to see signs of breeding. "Their gestation period is 21 days, so we should know something pretty soon," zookeeper Carla Thompson said. |
