During the Civil War, the famous Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest defeated a large Union raiding force of about 2000 mule-mounted men under Colonel Streight. The long running battle passed through Blountsville and near Susan Moore before ending in the surrender of what was left of the Union forces near Rome, Georgia. A reenactment of the battle involving infantry, cavalry, and artillery is staged in Blountsville each year and is a thrilling spectacle of living history.
