Contests for Susan Moore
High School Students

There seem to be a lot more contests available to high school students than when I was in school, and the prizes seem to be grander too although some contests are more for the thrill of the competition and to serve a good cause. I think a lot of students with hidden talents miss out by not trying to win some of these prizes -- so I will list those that I find here. If you know of any let me know and I would be happy to add them to the list.

This is "...a free international poetry and art contest for youth on the theme of WATERSHEDS. The contest is designed to help youth explore the natural and cultural history of the place they live, and to express, through poetry and art, what they discover." The prizes are more honorary than material, but the judges are quite prestigious and it would be a great honor to win or place. Students may enter on their own, or as part of a group (classroom, Girl Scout troop, 4-H, etc.). Poetry submissions are judged by River of Words co-founders Robert Hass, who served as US Poet Laureate from 1995-1997, and writer Pamela Michael. Art entries are judged by children's book writer and illustrator, Thacher Hurd. Collaborative poems are accepted, but only one child (chosen as the group representative) will be eligible for any prizes awarded. Poems are accepted in English, Spanish and American Sign Language.

The Alabama Crime Victims' Compensation Commission is a state of Alabama agency created in 1984 by the Alabama Legislature as a means to provide financial assistance to innocent victims of violent crime. The Commission can provide up to $15,000 in reimbursement for expenses incurred by violent crime victims. Innocent victims may receive reimbursement for funeral expenses, lost wages, medical/dental expenses, and counseling expenses. This year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Commission. Since its inception, the Commission has processed nearly 40,000 compensation claims and provided approximately eighty million dollars in compensation to assist innocent victims of violent crime.

As part of the celebration of its twenty-fifth year, the Commission is sponsoring an art contest for Alabama school children in grades kindergarten through twelfth grade. This is being done to honor the crime victims the Commission serves, as well as to create awareness about the Commission and the assistance that it provides.

CONTEST TOPICS:
K - 6th Grades: "Don't hit or hurt, be kind all of the time."
For students in these grades, the Commission hopes the art contest will help them realize the importance of never using violence against others, as well as the value of treating others with kindness.

7th - 12th Grades: "When you hurt someone, you hurt everyone."
For students in these grades, the Commission hopes the art contest will help students understand the far-reaching effects of violent crime. Crime not only hurts the victim, but the victim's loved ones, co-workers, etc.

Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform High School Contest -

The ACCR Foundation High School Education contest is where high school sophomore, junior or senior students can send in essay or multimedia entries. The deadline is March 23, 2009, but students can submit their entries anytime. The goal of the ACCR Foundation’s High School Education Contest is to give high school students throughout Alabama an opportunity to express themselves and, in the process, learn more about the 1901 Constitution. Students who are interested in submitting their entries can either use the online form or download and complete the printable form.

High school sophomores, juniors and seniors throughout the state are asked to submit essay or multimedia entries based on the following theme: “Who needs a new Constitution?” Contest entries should explore the student’s underlying rationale for their positions and can relate to such aspects as state economics, politics, race, tax structures and ethics, to name a few. Students are invited to discuss their personal responses to why this issue is relevant to the lives of all Alabamians as well as from the perspective of Alabama high school students.

The ACCR Foundation will offer first place ($500) and second place ($250) scholarship awards for the top two winners in both the Essay and Multimedia categories. The deadline for submissions is March 23, 2009. However, students are encouraged to send in their entries as soon as they are ready.

The winners will be announced through the local media before the school year ends. The top essay and multimedia award winners will be recognized during the Bailey Thomson Awards luncheon held by the ACCR Foundation on August 27, 2009 in Huntsville. A DVD copy of “It’s a Thick Book” may be available in the school library and the documentary is also available through the Alabama Public Television’s web site (http://www.aptv.org) under the “Alabama Teacher’s Resource” Section.
