Lapboard practice: finding the discriminant and factoring second degree trinomials using the "magic number" method.

Homework:
(1.) None.
Q3 W4 1/26/10 Tuesday
Class: (today's class notes - click here)
A factoring shortcut: when factoring quadratics if a = 1 you don't need to factor by grouping, you can write the factors using the two "magic numbers."

Definition of the discriminant d = b2 - 4ac and using the discriminant to determine if the quadratic can be factored or not, unless d is a perfect square the quadratic can not be factored - in other words, the magic numbers don't exist and the polynomial is prime.
